This is SO COOL! You did such a wonderful job–It’s awesome to see the process and all of the details are perfect!
Thanks Mandy!!
This cake is amazing! I love the Hunger Game series and got so excited when I saw this on Foodgawker. It’s beautiful!
Thank you!
Wow. You did a fantastic job. I must applaud your efforts.
Thank you Memoria!
That cake is amazing, super impressive! You should have won 1st in everything hands down. I haven’t read that book or series and I have read Great Gatsby and come on, people who voted for GG vs yours are horrible humans.
Thanks Robert! You could vote for up to three cakes in People’s Choice.
I wanted you to know that I’ve shown this cake to all my middle school students, who are big fans of The Hunger Games of course, and to all my booky, librarian, and reader friends. It’s gorgeous and you should have won. Can’t wait to see your next creation! I love your bentos, too, btw. Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow, thank you Suzanne! <3
Omg, this is amazing! I just made my first fondant covered cake and it took A TON of work. Oh, and I can’t believe you live in Honolulu too!
Hi Lynne! Thanks for visiting! Yes, tons of work… :O Funny that you live where I live!
I am very impressed. I really enjoyed reading this post last week. Then today I was reading the Cake Wrecks blog. On Sundays they reverse their “wreck” theme and showcase really pretty cakes, and when I read that last Sunday’s cake topic was National Library Week, I thought, they should include Pikko’s Hunger Games cake. And they did! So that was fun.
Thanks Grace! My cousin had told me to send it to them, but I forgot and I guess they saw it anyway!
Wow . This cake is absolutely amazing . my friends birthday is coming up & i planned on making a hunger games cake for her . When I saw this , I was ready to pee my pants , I was just so excited . Very much inspired . (:
oh , & how much fondant do you estimate you used making the mockingjay ?
Thanks Kayla!
Hmm, I don’t remember, but I think one package of the Wilton pre-made fondant was more than enough. You just have to roll it thin.
That is just amazing! I’m completely stunned!
Glad you like it Sarah!!
Wow, that is amazing! I am so impressed you didn’t just mimic the cover, you made it texturized/3D and added the nightberries!
Thanks weeble! I admit that my mockingjay was a bit bigger than I’d planned, haha! I almost couldn’t fit the title!
That is amazing! Do you mind if I try to make the same thing for my hunger games party for when the movie comes out?
WOW that’s all I can say. I am 13 and am turning 14 in 9 days and I really want this cake as my b-day cake. But I live in New Zealand and I was wondering if the equipment you used to make this cake was in NZ? and the cake is AMAZING
WOW. This is truly amazing. Kudos to you! So well done (and great choice as well!)
AMAZING! I’LL PAY YOU TO MAKE ME ONE!
This cake is AMAZING!!! I’m having a midnight premiere party and am trying to come up with some party ideas. There’s no way I can make this cake, but I’m thinking I can handle cupcakes.
Thanks for sharing how you made your book…there’s no way I would have been able to do my own without your help!
Amazing! I want a cake like that!
Wow, looks absolutely amazing!! Just a question to put out there though, if the mockingjay was so hard that it could simply be lifted onto the cake, does that mean it wasn’t edible?
@Emily: The mocking jay was made out of fondant so yes, of course it is edible. Hardening of fondant and gum paste is largely used in the cake industry. This is how flowers, people, etc are made. It is always edible, just a little crunchy but the taste remains the same.
OMG, this is amazing! I was surfing the internet for some hints about doing the mockingjay on a birthday cake and what you’ve done is simply stunning!
I am good at decorating cakes, but in a classic way, and I have never used fondant. I’m wondering how hard is it to mold it and if I can use a normal knife for cutting the feathers, as I don’t have any special equipment…
Great work, congratulation!
This is so fantastic! I just had a request to make a cake just like this, and so will be using your tutorial as inspiration! Thank you!
I totally understand about the heat & humidity in Honolulu. How many times I’ve had to find a frosting recipe that wouldn’t soften or melt in the heat. It doesn’t matter if it’s in December either. It’s still hot here. It’s extremely frustrating. I feel better knowing that others go through the same types of problems.
I can’t see the images? Were they removed, or is it a problem with my computer. I saw them a couple of weeks ago??
Yeah, I can’t see them either! Sadness!!!!!
I couldn’t see the pics either!!!
I am hosting a HG party next weekend and I need ideas but I can’t see the pics!
Allyson, please refresh the page and go to the link provided. I’ve moved this site over to my personal blog.
Oh my goodness! Incredible article dude! Thank
you so much, However I am encountering troubles with your feed.
I don’t understand why I am unable to subscribe to it. Is there anyone else getting identical RSS issues? Anyone that knows the answer can you kindly respond? Thanx!!
I’m not sure exactly why but this website is loading very slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later on and see
if the problem still exists.
I love to examine the finer points of these things, that’s what makes this site really tick over. Things other writers leave out.
That’s what I meant…. You’d have to be ill informed
to think different.
Don’t mind checking out blogs and such when its raining like today.
Need some extra writing on this – any opinions as to what books to read or what forums I
might join?
